(E3/10) Radcliffe Square on an early summer morning
– I love Radcliffe Square because of its friendly or warm sound. Radcliffe Square sounds like a room: it has walls and open doors, but no ceiling. I love to hear people coming in to the square from High Street and criss-crossing over it: up and down along the colleges, right across along the church or Radcliffe Camera, and diagonally from Catte Street to St. Mary’s Passage – their shoes and voices echoing against the walls. And the mixture of people as well – University staff, students, and visitors – some walking in deep thoughts, some passing through, some solving an academic problem, and some planning their day in the city.
